The best way to nourish and purify souls is “Zikrullah”. Zikrullah means “Remembrance of ALLAH”. Zikr is like the food for soul and if one is not doing it on regular bases their soul is start to starve. Zikrullah is the source of strength for soul and it will also help us to earn ALLAH’s pleasure and His love. There is no particular time for Zikr (except the compulsory acts like Salah) it can be done at anytime of the day. There are several ways of zikr. Zikr can be done by reciting Holy Quran, offering prayers, learning and teaching about Islam or remembrance of ALLAH by tongue and heart. Importance of zikr also highlighted several times in Quran and also in many Hadith.

Importance of Zikrullah in Holy Quran:

ALLAH (S.W.T) says about the importance of Zikr in multiple verses of Holy Quran:

In Surah Nisa:

So when you have offered your prayers remember Allah while standing, sitting and reclining; and when you feel secure, offer prayers in the usual manner; indeed prayers are a time bound obligatory duty upon the Muslims. (Nisa, 4:103)

In Surah Baqarah:

Therefore remember Me, I will cause you to be spoken of and acknowledge My rights, and do not be ungrateful. (Baqarah, 2:152)

Another verse of Holy Quran says:

And remember your Lord within your hearts humbly and with fear, and softly with your tongues, morning and evening, and do not be of the neglectful. (Aa’raf, 7:205)

In Surah Raad ALLAH (S.W.T) says:

Those who accepted faith and whose hearts gain comfort from the remembrance of Allah; pay heed! Only in the remembrance of Allah is the peace of hearts! (Raad, 13:28)

In other Surahs including surah Ankabut, Surah Ahzab and Surah Jummah ALLAH (S.W.T) says about Zikr:

O dear Prophet (Muhammad – P.B.U.H), recite from the Book which has been sent down to you, and establish the prayer; indeed the prayer stops from indecency and evil; and indeed the remembrance of Allah is the greatest; and Allah knows all what you do. (Surah Ankabut, 29:45)

…and the men who profusely remember Allah and the women who profusely remember Allah – for all of them, Allah has kept prepared forgiveness and an immense reward. (Surah Ahzab 33:35)

O People who Believe! Remember Allah profusely. And proclaim His Purity, morning and evening. (Ahzab 33:41 & 42)

And when the prayer ends, spread out in the land and seek Allah’s munificence, and profusely remember Allah, in the hope of attaining success. (Surah Jummah, 62:10)

Importance of Zikrullah in Hadith:

Prophet (P.B.U.H.) emphasize on importance of zikr, He said:

“The similarity of one who remembers his Rubb and one who does not remember Him, is like that of the living and the dead.” (Sahih Muslim: 779)

Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) also said:

“When a man enters his house, and remembers Allah when he enters and when he eats, Satan says: ‘You have no place to stay and no supper.’ If he enters his house and does not remember Allah upon entering, Satan says: ‘You have found a place to stay.’ And if he does not remember Allah when he eats, says: ‘You have found a place to stay and supper.’” (Sunan Ibn Majah: 3887)

Allah’s Messenger (P.B.U.H.) often said to His companions:

“Allah, the Most High said: ‘I am as My slave thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me to himself, I remember him to Myself, and if he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than that. And if he seeks to draw nearer to Me by a hand span, I draw nearer to him by a forearm’s length, and if he comes to Me by a forearm’s length, I draw nearer to him by an arm’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I come to him quickly.’” (Jami at-Tirmidihi: 3603)
