Zamzam is the name of the well that gives the water to billions of individuals all around the world who came for the purpose of Hajj and Umrah. The Well of Zamzam is located within the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, 20 m (66 ft) east of the Kabaah. Zamzam well is about 30 m (98 ft) deep and 1.08 to 2.66 m (3 ft 7 in to 8 ft 9 in) in diameter. Zamzam have a significance importance in the history of Islam.

One day ALLAH (S.W.T) ordered Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) to left his wife Hazrat Hajrah and his infant son Hazrat Ismail (A.S) in the mountainous and dry valley of Makkah. Makkah at that time was completely isolated with no evident buildings or people living there since there was no water for survival. There, Prophet Ibrahim left them with only a bag of dates and a leather bag filled with water. When Hazrat Hajrah ran out of food supplies in the scorching heat of Makkah, she started to search for water for her infant son. Hazrat Hajrah (A.S) ran bare foot between the mountains of Safah and Marwah. As Safah being the mountain closest to her, she climbed it and looked down at the valley to see if she could find anyone to assist her. She found no one and so she descended from the mountain until she reached the valley. Then she climbed Al-Marwah Mountain in keeping her search for water but to no avail. She went back to As-Safa then back again to Al-Marwah for seven times (It is now an integral part of Umrah called Sa’ee). The infant Hazrat Ismail (A.S) getting thirstier and start scraping the land by his little feet and suddenly the water sprang out of the ground. To stop the contain spring water Hazrat Hajrah repeated the command ‘ZAMZAM’, means ‘stop flowing’. From that day everyone named the well as ZAMZAM.

After so many years passed, the Zamzam well was dried and people of Makkah think that it is only a myth which they read in Bible. One day Hazrat Abdul Matalib, grandfather of Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ, saw in his dream that someone in his dream asked him to dig near Kabaah for the well of Zamzam. Next day he went on the same location which he saw in his dream, with his son Haris and start digging the floor. The people passing nearby make fun of them because they think that zamzam is only a myth.   1. Murwiya (derived from the Arabic word meaning ‘quenched’)
  2. Shabbaa’a- (derived from ‘satisfying’)
  3. Maymouna
  4. Hafirat Isma’il
  5. Hafirat ‘Abd al-Muttalib
  6. Birra
